NIKE X OFF WHITE
A partnership which would soon come to change the streetwear landscape entirely. It’s thanks to Virgil Abloh of OFF-WHITE, and already streetwear scene regular Nike, that an essential streetwear relationship would be born. Most commonly known for their work on their OFF WHITE NIKE, ‘The Ten’. The partnership would later develop into a wider range of sneakers and an eventual clothing line as well.
Gracing our feet firstly in October 2017, OFF WHITE would introduce their collaboration to fans with the release of the OFF WHITE JORDAN 1 ‘Chicago’. Appearing as a deconstructed copy of a not only an iconic colourway but also an iconic silhouette, this release would polarise fans as a seemingly prestigious and idolised pair would be stripped down and taken in a nearly completely different direction. However despite the inherent disruption this pair caused within sneaker communities there was inevitably a resell price tag stuck on them given the significance of the collaboration and release. Initially priced at $190 USD, only weeks later the pair would rise to around 6/700 AUD and now 3 years later, an unworn pair can set you back upwards of $4000 AUD.
Given the notable success of their first pair, over the years to come OFF WHITE would continue developing their range with Nike delivering ‘The Ten’ project which featured similar deconstructions of both other iconic Nike models as well as some more previously unheard of pairs. Similarly in addition to a now very successful range of OFF WHITE shoes, we would later see the launch of several accompanying active wear clothing lines and football related pieces. Mostly aimed at Nike’s more sporty and less of a streetwear crowd, many of the pieces are made with fabrics designed for use either on the track or on the field.
Finally alongside some of the most hyped and iconic releases to have ever occurred within the sneaker community, OFF WHITE has continued to expand their collaboration to include both significant events and institutions within the streetwear world. Having been showcased primarily through the adaptations of the OFF WHITE Air Force 1, this pair would see dedicated models designed and later released for the Complex event ComplexCon as well as both the museums MoMA and MCA. Additionally OFF WHITE would come to release two other collaboration pairs with Tennis player Serena Williams.
